Orlando, FL – LMG Touring, a leading provider of video, audio, lighting, and LED solutions for the live events industry, announces its role as the comprehensive production vendor for Hans Zimmer’s 2024 tour. This large-scale production brings together the legendary composer’s cinematic soundscapes with an impressive array of technology, creating an immersive experience for audiences across arenas.

“We’re grateful and excited to add Hans Zimmer to the list of incredible artists that we’ve been able to support” said Craig Mitchell, Account Executive at LMG Touring. “The scale of this show demonstrates our capacity to handle high-profile, technically demanding tours and our ability to bring designers’ visions to life.”

Expansive Video System

The visual centerpiece of the production is a massive LED wall measuring 66’11” wide by 25’7″ high, composed of 204 ROE CB5 LED tiles. This provides a stunning backdrop for Zimmer’s musical journey, offering exceptional clarity and vibrant color reproduction.

Jayson Wise, Director of Video at LMG, detailed the extensive camera setup: “We’ve deployed over 14 AIDA-HD3G-NDI-200 POV cameras across the stage, giving audiences intimate views of the performers. The integration of bar count monitors for the orchestra is another key element, providing real-time score information to ensure synchronization across the large ensemble.”

Comprehensive Audio Package

The audio setup for the tour is substantial, reflecting the intricacy of Zimmer’s compositions. Robby Schlegel, Director of Audio at LMG, outlined the system:

“We’re managing over 180 audio inputs through DiGiCo SD7 Quantum mixing consoles at both Front of House and Monitors. The OptoCore loop is maxed out with five SD Racks and one OrangeBox for MADI Multichannel Playback, allowing us to capture the full scope of the orchestral and electronic elements.”

LMG has also deployed the new L-Acoustics L2 line array system for delay hangs. “This is the first US arena tour to utilize the L2 system,” Schlegel noted. “It ensures consistent audio quality throughout large venues.”

A standout feature of the audio setup is the KLANG:konductor immersive in-ear monitoring system. “The KLANG:konductor adds a new dimension to the musicians’ experience,” Schlegel explained. “It allows for precise spatial placement of up to 128 MADI channels in a 3D mix environment. This system enables each musician to have a personalized, immersive soundstage, significantly enhancing their ability to hear themselves and their fellow performers clearly in a large ensemble setting.”

Another notable addition to the audio setup is the use of Fourier Transform Engines. “We’ve incorporated two Fourier Transform Engines into our signal processing chain,” Schlegel explained. “These are brand new to the market and represent a significant advancement in live audio processing. The Fourier Transform Engines allow us to apply complex, studio-quality effects and processing in real-time, something that was previously challenging in a live environment. This technology enables us to achieve a level of audio refinement that matches the intricacy of Zimmer’s compositions.”

Extensive Lighting Rig

The lighting design, created by John Featherstone of Lightswitch, is a crucial element in bringing Zimmer’s music to visual life. Featherstone’s design utilizes a substantial all-Robe fixture package, which LMG has supplied and implemented.

Marc Cloutier, Director of Lighting Systems for LMG, detailed the implementation of Featherstone’s design: “We’ve deployed 168 Robe MegaPointes as the core of our beam effects, along with Robe BMFL WashBeams, Tetra1, and Tetra2 fixtures. The rig also includes nine Robe RoboSpot follow spot systems, allowing for precise control in these large arena spaces.”

One of the most innovative aspects of the lighting setup is the custom networking solution for the RoboSpot systems. Cloutier elaborated, “We’ve implemented a unique system that allows all nine RoboSpot camera feeds to be monitored simultaneously on a single display. This gives our lighting team unprecedented control and coordination capabilities, ensuring that every lighting cue is executed with precision, regardless of the complexity of the performance or the size of the venue.”

Featherstone’s design also incorporates unique elements like a 7-foot mirror ball and custom “flower bed” fixtures, adding depth and texture to the visual landscape. “These pieces allow us to create moments of intimacy and wonder within the larger spectacle of the show,” Cloutier explained. “The mirror ball, in particular, is used to stunning effect during compositions from the ‘Interstellar’ soundtrack. When the beams hit the mirror ball, it transforms the entire arena into a mesmerizing starfield, perfectly complementing the cosmic themes of the music and immersing the audience in the vastness of space that the film portrays.”

Logisitical

Challenges

Mitchell emphasized the logistical complexity of the tour:

“Integrating these large-scale systems into a cohesive, touring-friendly package is an absolute necessity. Our team’s expertise in both the technical and logistical aspects of touring was crucial in bringing this production to life.”

Industry Impact

The Hans Zimmer tour showcases LMG’s ability to handle productions of significant scale and complexity. While the individual technologies are well-established in the industry, the combination and scale of their deployment in this orchestral context are noteworthy.

“This production demonstrates our capability to support large-scale, technically complex tours,” Mitchell concluded. “We’re proud to play a role in bringing John Featherstone’s lighting design and Hans Zimmer’s music to life on such a grand scale.”
